Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has confirmed the arrest of two of its rangers for contravening Section 59 (2)(b) of the Parks and Wildlife Act, Chapter 20:14.

According to ZimParks, investigations revealed that the arrested rangers were involved in the illegal supply of game meat to various restaurants. Authorities have recovered over 70 kilograms of impala meat linked to the suspects.

The rangers are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to the illegal trade.

In a statement shared by Zimparks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, ZimParks reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Zimbabwe’s wildlife and emphasized that no individual is above the law. The authority reiterated its dedication to preserving the country’s natural heritage for current and future generations.

Incidents involving Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) rangers engaging in illegal activities have been reported in recent years. In October 2024, a ZimParks ranger named Hali Mabuya was arrested for allegedly poaching and beheading three lions in Hwange National Park.

Mabuya was found with a .458-caliber service rifle and 52 rounds of ammunition, including 30 rounds not issued by his employer. The lions’ carcasses were discovered headless and without paws, indicating possible involvement in a poaching syndicate.

In May 2023, ZimParks arrested several of its rangers for participating in illegal mining activities within wildlife sanctuaries. Ten rangers, including the Doma Safari Area Manager, were implicated in allowing or directly engaging in mining operations inside protected areas. Some rangers were dismissed following internal investigations
