The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has expressed concern over a surge in crocodile attacks, which have claimed nine lives and left 11 others injured in the past two months.

According to a press statement released by ZimParks, the attacks have also resulted in significant livestock losses, with at least 44 cattle and 60 goats falling victim to crocodiles during the same period. A total of 49 cases of human-crocodile conflict have been recorded.

The Mid-Zambezi region, which includes Lake Kariba, Angwa River, and Hunyani River, has been the hardest hit, reporting 19 cases. The Central region, encompassing Kwekwe River, Sebakwe River, and Munyati River, recorded 14 cases, while 16 additional incidents were documented in Matopo, Harare, North-West Matabeleland, and the South-East Lowveld.

With the rainy season in full swing, ZimParks is urging communities to exercise extreme caution near water bodies. They have advised that children and livestock should not be left unattended near rivers or lakes to prevent them from becoming easy targets.

“Additionally, when engaging in water activities such as fishing, swimming, and other domestic chores in water, it is essential to barricade around the places to ensure safety,” the statement read.
